In my daily life I am a Halifax (Nova Scotia, Canada)-based science writer and editor. But, I'm also a golfer, a decades-long hacker.
Golf is the greatest sport/life pursuit that there is. As the vigour of youth fades, the (hopefully) wisdom and maturity of later life can make a golfer the best he or she will be. Can’t say that about the 100 yard dash.
So, golf is important to me and I’m getting on. It’s time to stop dreaming and do what I’ve always wanted to do, before … well, let’s just say that I should presume that all my golfing adventures are mortal and not in the hereafter.
That’ why this summer I’m off to St. Andrews for The Open. And, hopefully (I’ve got my pass) Whistling Straits a month later for the PGA. To top it off, the last round of the PGA falls on the 55th birthday.
I’m going to take you along with me on this adventure. We’ll journey by train from Glasgow to Edinburgh for a few days immersion in the local culture. Then, we will make the trip to the golfing nirvana; St. Andrews. Imagine heading to the course at sunrise to catch a glimpse of Mr. Woods (oh yeah, he’ll be back) and strolling down the village streets at sunset. My accommodation - the dorm at St. Andrews University, the second oldest university in the world (and about a three iron away from the first tee at the old course) - is new to me (so is Scotland) and should make a tale worth telling. Then, a few weeks later, it’s off to Kohler, Wisconsin, for the PGA. It is a very modern course that grew out of what was a military waste site. It's new but oozes ancient. No cookie -cutter North American course this. This is a course that requires skill, creativity, balls (the courage kind) and patience.
It should be fun and fodder for some decent articles. But …. cue the shameless pandering, I’m looking to at least break even by selling some of my scribbling. So, dear readers, any contacts you can provide are gratefully appreciated. I've been beating the bushes, but you must know of folks whose publication could be zipped up by some golf-related articles. You can help send this child to camp.
Hey, it’s a try. Either way, I’m going on Brian’s most excellent golf adventure. I look forward to sharing the experience with you.
