After cruising into the Men's Final of the Snowboarding Halfpipe Competition in First Place, USA Rider Shaun White easily defended his 2006 Olympic Gold Medal Title.
The competition really boiled down to a solid battle amongst the other riders for the Silver and Bronze positions. Many pinned White as the favorite going in and he did not dissapoint. Which score of the 2 final runs was he going to use? The 46.8 after Run 1? Naw, it had to be "Heavier" than that. That's right, a 48.4 was the Winning mark for the now 2-Time Defending Olympic Gold Medalist Shaun White. A near-perfect run, and it technically wasn't even needed.
On a night when many were wondering if they were even going to get a chance to witness White's unique 'Double McTwist' trick which he apparently kept in his bag during the first few runs of the competition. It simply wasn't needed. His 46.8 score on the first run of the Men's Final assured him the Gold before he even had a chance to throw his last run down. White celebrated atop the pipe before a soon-to-be 'victory run.' White thought for a second about just cruising down the center of the pipe down to the cheering crowd. But wait a minute, we are talking about the same 'Flying Tomato,' right? His coaches instilled in him the vision of going bigger, telling him to "Drop the 'Double Mc' at the end"!! They came to Vancouver to show the World what their product is able to do! White did as well, and again, did not dissapoint. "I just felt like I didn't come all the way to Vancouver not to pull out the big guns," White said.
His straight air was simply bigger. His tricks were simply better. He is simply, the best Snowboarder on the planet. And as Finland's Peetu Piiroinen said, "It's impossible to beat Shaun unless he falls." Tonight, along with the '10 Winter X-Games, proved to be the case.
